ALMOST SPRING

Nine-thirty am, still snowing, schools closed, but no child has yet made it up to the roof garden that I tend for my building. Mine are the first tracks of the day. I plod through drifting snow past the stacked-up lounge furniture and displaced planters to find the snow image I didn't know enough to look for. Five fat robins are visiting. I don't know if they had stayed in New York City all winter or had just flown back for spring, but they are eating the leftover aronia and barberry fruit. I'm not prepared, have no telephoto lens, but I'm thrilled that they stay a while in my garden.

How did they find the 18th floor?

Robins always make me worry... every year! They always arrive way too early, before our Spring weather has arrived. They always seem to make it, though. Your photos are great!

Btw: I've always maintained that the deer don't bother being in my yard. However, upon looking closer at the tracks in my yard today... deer prints. All over! Yipes! I'll have to start being noisy before too long... and doing discouraging things so they don't find their way back here come Spring (when my hosta begin growing!)! Have a great weekend.

Thanks Shady. Have you ever tried some
of the alliums that grow in shade, like A. moly for dry shade, A. scenescens or A. thunbergii, which might discourage deer among your hostas? esp

So peaceful and calm in the snow. Maybe you could put up a little gazebo with heaters so you can sit outside in winter to enjoy the tranquility.

Looks like you're getting more than my fair share of the snow. We're only getting a little taste of the recent snow storms.

Unless your building has a doorman to help them use the elevator I'm pretty sure they flew up to the 18th floor.

Urban Gardens, Great idea! I plan to bring your suggestion for a heated gazebo to the condo board. But I want it reserved for my exclusive use.And what will all the smokers do?

Great idea, Ellen! Thanks! This is a project very much looking into. :-)

Any advice about moles? A very industrious one invited itself into our front and south yard last Fall. He's done a LOT of craziness!!

From John M. in the Welsh countryside.
Just been peeking at Garden Bites and most entertaining. Absolutely loved the roof garden pics, particularly the robins with the flake streaks and indeed how did they find it …someone must know ,have you
enquired of the nat.history boffins in NY ??.
